Because I’ve lived in Huntsville, Alabama for decades, I’ve watched it grow from a charming town with a rich history into a cosmopolitan city full of diverse cultural experiences and unique events! I enjoy traditional activities that have been enjoyed for generations but also new activities that have recently emerged. Let’s explore some of the “tried and true” as well as some things you may not know about yet!
“Tried and True to Do” in Huntsville:
A DEFINITE “TRIED AND TRUE” ACTIVITY FOR ME IS ATTENDING A NIGHT AT THE SYMPHONY!
The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra is a true gem when looking for something cultural as well as entertaining. As a matter of fact, the orchestra has a long history dating back to 1955 and is renowned for its high level of artistic excellence. They perform a wide range of classical and contemporary music, including symphonies, operas, and pops concerts, with a repertoire that spans centuries and continents. Undeniably, the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra is integral to the city’s cultural landscape, enriching the community with beautiful music and inspiring performances.
* My tip: Want to add something new to top off the night? Walk to the Co-Op Community Table inside Embassy Suites by Hilton Huntsville for dessert and a nightcap.
FEELING OUTDOORSY?
I enjoy taking a hike in Monte Sano State Park. Just a short drive from downtown Huntsville, Monte Sano State Park offers some of the best hiking trails in the area. With over 2,100 acres of natural beauty, it’s the perfect place to explore scenic overlooks, book a rustic cabin overnight, or host a picnic in the woods.
* My tip: Take along a picnic basket, pre-order a charcuterie board from Cured and Company or stop in Dallas Mill for grab-and-go sandwiches and their strawberry pretzel dessert.
WHEN I NEED TO FEED MY ARTISTIC SIDE, THIS MEANS A VISIT LOWE MILL ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT.
Located in a historic cotton mill, Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment is the largest privately owned arts facility in the United States. With over 200 studios and galleries, visitors can watch artists at work, take a class, or purchase one-of-a-kind art pieces. Some of my favorite Saturdays are sitting for “fairy hair” extensions, trying something new at The Veggie, and buying artisan chocolates at Pizzelle’s Confections.
New Huntsville Experiences:
FOR ME, “NEW TO HUNTSVILLE” STARTS WITH A VISIT TO STOVEHOUSE.
This former stove factory turned entertainment complex is home to restaurants, bars, a coffee shop, retail stores, and Huntsville’s first rooftop lounge. Accordingly, the atmosphere at Stovehouse is fun and vibrant, with live music and other events happening regularly. Visitors can enjoy delicious food and drinks while taking in the industrial-chic décor or exploring the different shops. The outdoor spaces are similarly impressive. There are plenty of fire pits and seating areas where people can relax and socialize.
* My tip: Do you prefer organized fun? Stop in for Trivia Night at Pourhouse or join the Rocket Westies for a West Coast Swing dance class.
AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, I MAKE IT A POINT TO EAT LOCAL.
With lots of locally owned options, natives and visitors alike can sample everything from house-made pasta at Mazzara’s to soul food at G’s Country Kitchen to upscale Mexican at La Esquina Cocina.
* My tip: Wish you could try several places in one night? Design your own progressive dinner! Make reservations at different locations. First stop, cocktails! Afterward, appetizers can be enjoyed elsewhere, followed by an entrée somewhere new, and dessert at a final destination! Voila! LASTLY, WHEN I JUST WANT TO RELAX, IT’S TIME TO SIP ON CRAFT COCKTAILS AT A ROOFTOP LOUNGE.
Fortunately, Huntsville is home to several equally impressive rooftop cocktail lounges that offer stunning views of the city’s skyline. These establishments provide the perfect setting to unwind after a long day or celebrate a special occasion with friends. Some of my favorites include Baker and Able at 106 Jefferson by Curio, Stella’s Elixir Lounge, and Rhythm on Monroe. Each of these locations feature creative cocktail menus and cozy seating areas.
* My tip: Want to mix it up? Create an upstairs-downstairs tour and include Catacomb and Voodoo! Unquestionably, we can help make this happen in fine style for your larger groups.
